Two turning points of the US Civil War that occurred in July 1863 were the Battle of Gettysburg and the fall of Vicksburg.

Gettysburg was a Union victory that would inflict enough damage on Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia that it would never again attempt an offensive north of the Potomac River, and only minor offensive action south of it.

The fall of Vicksburg gave control of the Mississippi River along its entire length to the Union and cut off the western third of the Confederacy from the east. This would deny resources such as men, beef, and other supplies to the eastern armies and population. These twin defeats mould prove to be mortal wounds to the Confederate States of America.
