Britain was locked in a major war with Napoleon, in which both sides were blockading the other, which means stopping any ship that might be delivering goods to the other side. The War Hawks were also annoyed that the British had good relations with the natives, which included trading with them.

The group argued that invading, and forcibly annexing Canada, would be. in Jefferson's words, "merely a matter of marching," given that the US population was then 20 times that of Canada. This was not all that popular: The New England states, amazed at the idea, started openly discussing seceding from the Union. There were anti-war riots in Boston.

And so, in June of 1812, the United States attacked its neighbour. Big mistake. Much larger American forces crossed into Upper and Lower Canada, which was defended by only 5200 British solders and roughly three times as many natives and Canadian militia. The invaders were decisively defeated in a series of battles, and retreated, not only back over the border, but beyond, surrendering Detroit, Buffalo, and Fort Dearborn (Chicago).

The British went on the offensive, taking Washington and burning the White House. However, at no time did they attempt to retake the United States. In fact, weary of war after defeating Napoleon, the British rather generously turned back all the American territory it had conquered and signed the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the war.

Ironically, the American invasion, the second since an American army attacked Canada in 1775, brought English and French speaking Canadians together, and began talk of nationhood, which began a reality in 1867.

General William Henry Harrison established a fort on the south side of the Maumee River on February 2, 1813, and named it for the Governor of Ohio, Jonathon Meigs.

The fort would serve as an important player in the way. It was home to more than 2,000 U.S. armymen and militia. Although the British laid siege to the fort on May 1, 1813, it was not captured like other forts. Harrison and his troops were prepared, and withstood the British attack for four days, at which point a troop of Kentucky militia arrived to help. The siege lasted a total of 9 days, and then the British soldiers gave up and returned to Canada. This failure, the first significant one for the British, is what marked the turning point. It gave the Americans new hope, and was the start of more victories, including another attack on this particular fort.

The series of American naval victories in 1813 beginning with the Constitution and United States had the capacity to boost American morale, the shift in the American mindset had such an impact, that although indirect allowed the United States to turn the tide of the war. It is in this year that a famous battle cry would be born. "Don't give up the ship" was the rally that the Americans needed to secure the American ship Chesapeake from hands of the British. One key to the turning point of the war occurred when the United States gained control of Lake Erie. This waterway was the super highway of the day, without this military holding the Americans would never have been able to gain the footholds they would need to foster their resolve. THE turning point...Baltimore, 1814. Fort McHenry held it's ground, and the British were forced south. Perhaps the best reminder of this turning point are the lyrics to the United States' national anthem. Francis Scott Key witnessed this crucial moment in history and penned the words that continue to remind us that steadfastness and faith are cruical elements in the American experience.

It was the result of escalating tension between the two countries due to issues with trade. It was a turning point in our country's history because we won! It solidified our independence as a country. It also boosted the economy at the time because it stimulated manufacturing.

Well, okay, we didn't win. The explicit, and well-documented, war aim of the United States in attacking a neighbour was the forcible annexation of Canada. Had the US won, there would never have been a Canada.

Ten full-scale US invasion forces were sent over the border to defeat much smaller numbers of Canadians, aboriginals, and a small core of British troops. But all ten were decisively defeated, in a series of battles. In the subsequent retreat, they surrendered Detroit, Buffalo, and Fort Dearborn (Chicago). Eventually, in launching a counter-invasion, the British took Washington, burned the White House, and occupied large amounts of US territory.

Britain was in the middle of a much, much bigger war against Napoleon, and barely noticed the US invasion. It's 5200 troops in Canada were fewer than the number stationed in Bermuda over those three years, but they were enough to turn back the invaders.

When Napoleon was defeated, Britain suddenly had close to 100,000 battle-hardened soldiers available to cross the Atlantic and finish the job. But it had no intention of undoing the American revolution, and chose instead to allow the US to move back to the original borders.

Weeks after the peace treaty ending the war was signed, the Americans won a victory at New Orleans...followed by an equally important British victory at the capture of Fort Bowyer. Neither battle had any effect on the outcome of the war, but American newspapers touted New Orleans as "the winning battle", and ignored the defeat at Fort Bowyers.

However, the war did boost the economy by stimulating manufacturing. The US, particularly New England, relied heavily on exports through its ports. Despite some US naval victories, the US was never able to end, or even dent, the Royal Navy blockade of all the US ports -- causing the seven states to seriously, publicly discuss seceding from the Union -- and it had a devastating effect on the economy. But that, in the end, led to the birth of the manufacturing sector.
