As time passed, the name America, was used to describe the colonies. Then, the United States of America, after independence was won from England, when the American Revolutionary War was over and done.

There were, of course, others -- Robert Morris, who financed the Revolutionary War, was from England, as was Thomas Paine, writer of Common Sense, and Alexander Hamilton, first Secretary of the Treasury and a Framer, was from the West Indies. But most of them were from the colonies. The Founders were people who believed in the Rev. cause and stood up for it...and made a difference.
