The most northern colony in the Mid-Atlantic region was New York, while the most central colony was Pennsylvania. New York is located just below the New England colonies, and Pennsylvania is situated to the west of New Jersey, making it centrally located within the Mid-Atlantic. Both played significant roles in the early development of the United States.
Cotton requires a longer growing season and hotter weather than is present in the North - it doesn't do well if the temperature drops below 60 °F (~15 °C) and thrives in temperatures around 90 °F (~32 °C). Cotton simply will not thrive in the the colder temperatures present most of the year in the North. It also requires a fairly long growing season - again, a problem in the North. Most cotton growing regions fit the description of hot and fairly long growing season - Southeastern US, Egypt, India, etc.

This climate typically occurs in regions just below the Arctic Circle, where temperatures can drop significantly in winter, often remaining below freezing for extended periods. The growing season is limited, leading to a short summer with cooler temperatures. Areas with this climate include parts of Canada, Alaska, and northern Scandinavia.
