There are two possible outcomes to a revolt by a colony against a colonizing country. Either the revolt is suppressed and the colony continues to be a colony, or the revolt succeeds and the colony gains its independence.

What Haiti's independence did for the rest of the colonies in the Americas is that everyone else figured that if a slave revolt resulted in a successful independence war against a world power like France, it would be much easier to fight an already failing power like Spain (it didn't).

Everyone that lived in the French colony were slaves of African origin. In 1791 about 100,000 of them rose in revolt. Toussaint L'Ouverture a former slave became their leader. Napolean sendt roops to the island to end the rebellion but failed. in 1804 the colony declared its independence as Haiti
