The French Revolution arose from a power struggle between the landowning elite and the new commercial-based elite. The rural and urban lower classes, each with a varied mix of agendas and needs within their ranks, were enlisted by each side to support them.

There were no clear sides - an example of the diverse mix of motivations, the National Guard was not of the lower class revolutionaries, but raised by the middle class to protect them from the mob. It could be summarised as a mix of festering socio-economic problems, the growth of a newly-conscious urban middle class, and a struggle for power and preservation of upper-class interests and ascendancy.

What was the French Involvement into the revolution?

French involvement in the American Revolution was driven by a desire to weaken Britain, their long-time rival. The French government provided significant military and financial support to the American colonies, including troops, naval forces, and supplies, particularly after the American victory at the Battle of Saratoga in 1777. This support was formalized through the Treaty of Alliance in 1778. Ultimately, France's involvement not only contributed to the American victory but also set the stage for its own financial troubles, which later influenced the French Revolution.
