Is corrections a rehabilitation or punishment?

Corrections in the US is rehabilitation in word and punishment in reality. There are two parts to this problem. First, one can be rehabilitated only if one wants to; no one can force rehabilitate anyone. Second, there is no real desire to offer the opportunity for American inmates to rehabilitate, and it is easy to blame the inmate because the inmate cannot be force rehabilitated.

Why does rehabilitation in prisons not work?

Most inmates do not receive any rehabilitation because there is so many and not enough money or programs. the inmates are just locked away "cold turkey" with the hopes that will help. Believe it or not but it would cost the state less money to but an inmate in a substance abuse house/ program verses sending them to prison and locking the door and hiding the key for (said amount of time) Maybe some inmates could get the help them need verses going back to drugs, alcohol once they get out.

What is the function of your prison system?

Rehabilitation, including learning jobs, and of course, punishment by imprisonment to either keep the individual from harming others outside of prison, and to deter crime. (That doesn't work really well) Of course, execution of a convicted person ensures that he will never again hurt people, especially his/her fellow inmates. (giving "death row" inmates 25 years worth of appeals may not protect his fellow inmates all that much!
