Marcus Aurelius.
Marcus Aurelius was not the last emperor to rule a united empire. He was one of the good emperors but Theodosius the Great was in fact the last emperor to rule a united Roman Empire.
He was the last of the "Five Good Emperors", and nearly completed a campaign to conquer Germany.
Marcus Aurelius was one of the five good emperors (Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius) whose rule was benign and enlightened. He was a prominent stoic philosopher. He was described as a philosopher-king and was said that he was more philanthropic and philosophic and his 'good' predecessors. Ancient historian Herodian wrote; "Alone of the emperors, he gave proof of his learning not by mere words or knowledge of philosophical doctrines but by his blameless character and temperate way of life."
Marcus Aurelius died in 180 AD, marking the end of the Pax Romana and the reign of the Five Good Emperors. The last emperor of the Western Roman Empire, Romulus Augustulus, was deposed in 476 AD. Therefore, approximately 296 years passed between the death of Marcus Aurelius and the fall of the Western Roman Empire with the rule of Romulus Augustulus.

After the death of Marcus Aurelius, the last of the Five Good Emperors, Rome descended into chaos. A civil war raged from 180 until 193, and only stopped after the death of Commodus. The senate became practically meaningless with members mainly being there because of connections to the emperor. Rome's growth stagnated, the leadership was incompetent and the atmosphere was one of chaos and rebellion.Rome had to settle waves of incoming migrant peoples, who became the backbone of the army and eventually took over the Western Empire.
