The acquisition of new territory.
Commodore Perry arrived in Japan for trading rights from Japan. Japan only opened two ports for trading. Soon other countries start trading with Japan. The result was Japan becoming more industrialized. They became more modern. Japan began building factories and soon became a wealthy country.
The trading with other countries helped them in becoming more seen. Culture diffusion occurred ,which helped their economy, and trading helped Japan to modernize.
People were displaced and died, property was destroyed, and eventually Japan was defeated and occupied.
Possibly, at least partially: Japan was GREATLY angered over the 1922 Washington Naval Treaty which gave them only 300,000 naval tons, compared to Britain and the US's 500,000 naval tons. Japan's "Nationalism" may have led them to demand equal shares of tonnage. On the other hand; Britain & the US had "two" ocean navies, Japan didn't. So that was a partial explanation for the 5:5:3 division. Italy ignored the Washington Treaty. Germany wasn't affected by it. In the early 1930's Germany & Japan walked out of the League of Nations.
