The earliest Greek people were the Minoans. They lived on the island of Crete 3000 years ago and their civilization lasted for 2000 years. Greece is a peninsula that is easily accessible by boat. This feature made it an ideal place to settle and because the Minoans were trading with other countries, Greece was well known.

The first people to settle on the islands of the Aegean Sea were the Cycladic civilization around 3200 BCE. They were followed by the Minoans on Crete by around 2600 BCE and the Mycenaeans on mainland Greece by around 1600 BCE.
The term barbarian can be traced back to Ancient Greece. But the Barbarian groups can be traced back to perhaps before the 1st century CE.

Mycenaean civilization existed from 2000-1100 B.C.E. (They are considered the first Greeks) The Dark Ages in Greece are from 1100-750 B.C.E. In 800 B.C.E. Homer brought them out of the Dark Ages. The Classical Greek age is from 479-336 B.C.E. Greek fell sometime around 338 B.C.E. So 2000-338 B.C.E. (All information is from Sherman and Salisbury's "The West In the World" Third Edition.
