After the Spanish American War, Guam became an American Territory. Actually it was a small island not really worth much. It actually became an American coaling station, or a place where American ships could refuel, or a filling station for ships.
During the American Revolution, Puerto Rico was a colony of Spain. Spain remained neutral in the conflict between Great Britain and the American colonies but provided support to the Americans later in the war. The island was not a battleground during the revolution, as its strategic importance was recognized but it did not directly participate in the conflict. Puerto Rico remained under Spanish control until it was ceded to the United States in 1898 following the Spanish-American War.

Prior to these events, the only language on the island was Rapa Nui. However, given Chilean control, the majority of people on the island speak Spanish.
