Well you see... Columbus sailed on a lot of ships. To withstand the harsh conditions of the sea it was necessary to construct said ships so that they were relatively stiff in structure. These were Columbus' hard ships.
On October 11, 1492, Columbus claimed in his dairy that he saw a light that looked like it was from a candle. The next day, October 12, one of his crew members, Rodrigo de Triana, actually saw land. Nevertheless, Columbus stated his sighting was the first sighting of land, which allowed him to keep the reward money promised to the first person to see land.
In 1497, Italian-born John Cabot sailed from England to North America, looking for a northern route to Asia. Accounts vary on where he landed; most likely it was the coast of Newfoundland, Labrador or Cape Breton.
