The reasons are two fold.

1) to obtain a steady source of raw materials that were not found in the motherland , yet needed to produce goods and services to generate capital ( money) This also included tariffs on goods delivered to the colony but produced elswhere.

2) to create an addition market in which to sell goods and services produced in the motherland.
