It may stand to reason that the Third Estate gained the most, but only when compared to what the other Estates lost. The Catholic Church may have been the biggest looser in terms of power, prestige and wealth. Monasteries that had owned huge properties for hundreds of years which had supported thousands in agricultural jobs for centuries were confiscated by the state. Even metropolitan church building were seized and put to use as stables and warehouses. Death losses by the Catholic Clergy were staggering and abbots, monks and nuns were exiled, joined the peasants or were killed.

The Nobility lost their titles, many lost their lives and property and some refused to return to France even when the Monarchy was eventually restored.
