Mitchell Palmer
Alexander Mitchell Palmer was born on 4th May, 1872. Worried by the revolution that had taken place in Russia, Palmer became convinced that Communist agents were planning to overthrow the American government. His view was reinforced by the discovery of thirty-eight bombs sent to leading politicians and the Italian anarchist who blew himself up outside Palmer's Washington home. He launched a campaign against radicals and left-wing organizations with help of John Edgar Hoover.
A. Mitchell Palmer was called a "red-blooded patriot" due to his fervent anti-communist stance during the Red Scare of the early 20th century. As U.S. Attorney General, he led aggressive campaigns against suspected radicals and anarchists, embodying the era's intense nationalism and fear of foreign influences. His actions, including the Palmer Raids, were seen as a defense of American values and security, solidifying his image as a staunch patriot committed to protecting the nation from perceived threats.
Mitchell Palmer raided immigrants' homes primarily due to the fear of radicalism and the rise of communism during the post-World War I period, known as the Red Scare. The raids aimed to target and deport suspected anarchists and communists, fueled by a broader concern over domestic terrorism following events like the 1919 bombings. Additionally, these actions were politically motivated, as Palmer sought to bolster his own position and appeal to public fears regarding immigration and national security.
The "A" in A. Mitchell Palmer was his first name. It stood for Alexander.
