"One choice could blow all blood of the commonwealth" said Domitian. Domitian was an emperor of Rome. Not exactly a good one. He was power hungry, cruel, harsh and mean. Some supported him for power and money but many citizens hated him a lot. No wonder he was murdered at Flavian Palace on September 18 96 A.D. But he was known for many achievements and even a few failures. Many people though, did not realize his intelligence. He was a walking dictionary.

Domitian was born on October 24 51 B.C. Domitian was taken care of mostly by his Uncle Titus Flavius Sabinus II. He unlike the other sons of famous people was not educated at court, he was educated by a young man that attended a senatorial class. He was particularly great at literature and speech. He was bald and he was extremely sensitive when he was humiliated about and other stuff as well. A little later he started wearing custom made wigs until he started grew his hair. He learned a lot about his hair and also made a book on it. The more and more he got humiliated the more he was harsh, rude, and mean (and later on power hungry). Even though he grew as a brutal tyrant he was super intelligent. He wanted to be a great soldier and have great military power. At a very young age he planned out strategies for wars. He gained a lot of interest from his dad the emperor of that time because he also planned out war strategies. His brother was before him to take the throne. He ruled for 2 good years until he died. And that's when Domitia took over the throne and power.

Domitian had achievements and some failures, here are some of his achievements. He expanded the government. He extended the territory of Rome and brought great power to them. He had the best plans ever known in Roman history. He styled himself and named himself the "Lord of the God' and was worshipped alot for his great power. He later one started to hold costly entertainment in the amphitheatre and in circuses for the citizens. No one knows why but they think he had a soft side as well. He held events such as chariot racing and battling, gladiatorial shows, and secular games. He gave 300 sesterces to his favorable men and slaves on different occasions. He was the first one to wear a golden crown and half boots, and later many of what he wore that were unique became the top style in the empire.

Domitian also had a few failures. He usually gave great wealth and power ti the people so they can support him. He feared that he might die like a Julius Ceasar and feared his death more than Augustus. So, instead he tried to make his citizens happy and wealthy. After giving so much pride to his citizens, he went back into focus on power. Even when he looked generous some people knew he was still power hungry. He wanted everyone, even outcasts and slaves, to think he was just as powerful as god. He stopped spreading power everywhere and using his riched. He wanted to have a great army and pay them a lot but that ruined his reputation for the citizens and then the loss of reputation for the army he had. There were small protests everywhere about him stepping down and so to stop the protests, Domitian putting many people to death which then brought more people turned over him and all a sudden, Domitian was in danger. Many people did not like his sacrifices. Every once and then he took one person and burned their private parts as a sacrifice to please the gods and himself.

Domitian may have been power hungry and wanted to control others but he was smart and took it step by step like Julius Caesar. But at the very end, when he was so close of gaining his citizens trust he took a huge step and fell right off, and there was no starting back over. The lesson I learned was that sometimes smaller steps takes you somewhere safely than those larger steps in life. And also that sometimes you can be fooled by ones that are not really good, such as Domitian and surprisingly like Alexander the Great. Domitian could have been a great leader but he blew his chance.

Why were some Romans concerned by the changes that accompanied the expansion of Roman international power?

The expansion of Roman power via conquest of other peoples was a double edged sword for some of Rome's leaders. Rome's military conquests brought to Rome more wealth via taxation and tribute from Rome's new territories. It also increased Rome's supply of resources in farming, mining and other aspects of industry that Rome required. Conquest also brought in new slaves to support the Roman economy. In addition, some leaders of the conquered lands saw that allegiance to Rome protected them from other empires that posed a more severe threat then having Rome rule their lands. The down side of Rome's expansion meant that Roman government had a new area to rule and that placed a degree of complications for Rome. It also brought Rome into closer contact with powers like Carthage which posed a threat to Rome. It also meant that Rome's military forces had to be expanded and thus this cost money and training time. Internally, Rome's military now gave Roman generals such as Caesar, more power and influence in the government of Rome.
