John Marshell working for John Sutter in the Columa sawmill saw gold in the traces. He actually saw it the first time several months before it was reported in the newspaper. Sutter wanted to keep it quite because he knew that a rush of gold seekers would arrive in California. He was right and the gold rush resulted in his going broke, loosing land, and he died a broken man.
