The idea of a "military" is that a bunch of guys could get together to force some OTHER bunch of guys to give them their food, gold, jewels, possessions, women or whatever, and that the second bunch could organize to protect themselves from the first group.
Some people from the beginnings of the human race have been thieves, and the entire concept of warfare has been to defend against thieves, or to engage in thievery by banding together for support.
The entire concept of "military" is that we need to band together to protect "Us" from "Them". The fact that it is true doesn't make it any prettier.
