I am trying to find the answer to this as well. I have a photo postcard of the ship with the officers' signatures all over it which was given to my father, who knew them, in Sept 1913. They gave a birthday party for him aboard Scharnhorst in June 1913 (I have his place name card) I want to try and trace any surviving relatives of any of those who signed the card

At that time, German armoured cruises SMS Scharnhorst and SMS Gneisenau (German East Asia Squadron) arrived to Germans Samoa but were also surrounded by the invasion of Allies in the ocean, and therefore, they backed off.
