General George Washington is well remembered for crossing the Delaware to defeat the Hessians at Trenton. He caught the Hessians by surprise, as they didn't believe anyone foolish enough to cross a river into an occupied city.
The most important factor that facilitated the defeat of the Hessians at the Battle of Trenton was George Washington's strategic surprise attack on December 26, 1776. The Hessians, caught off guard after celebrating Christmas and underestimating the American forces, were unprepared for the assault. Washington's decision to cross the icy Delaware River and launch a coordinated attack in the early morning hours capitalized on this element of surprise, leading to a decisive American victory. This victory not only boosted American morale but also reinvigorated the revolutionary cause.

The Hessians had been up celebrating and Washington and his men surprised them, defeating them soundly in the Battle of Trenton (December 26, 1776).
George Washington and the American Army
While it would be fun to say that is was to get to the other side, the truth is that he wanted to attack Trenton, New Jersey. He crossed it on 24 December and attacked on 25 December 1776 taking the Hessians by surprise. The Hessians surrendered, making the battle at Trenton the first American victory in the Revolutionary War.
