Viscount Louis Mountbatten was the first and last British Governor-General of India. He held that position from the 15th August 1947 to the 21st June 1948, when he was succeeded by C. Rajagopalachari. Until 1947, India was governed by an Viceroy.
The last Governor-General of the East India Company was Lord Charles Cornwallis, who served from 1786 to 1793 during his first term and again from 1805 to 1806. His tenure is noted for significant administrative reforms and the introduction of the Permanent Settlement, which aimed to streamline tax collection in Bengal. Cornwallis played a crucial role in establishing British authority in India, shaping colonial policies for years to come.
The East India Company became the diwan of Bengal in 1765, following the Battle of Buxar. This victory over the combined forces of the Mughal Empire, along with the Nawab of Bengal and the Nawab of Awadh, granted the Company the right to collect revenue in Bengal, effectively establishing its administrative control over the region. This marked a significant step in the Company's transition from a trading entity to a governing power in India.
