The USS ward was the ship that fired the first American shots during the attack on Peal Harbor

The Japanese flew Japanese Zero/fighter planes (a.k.a. "meatballs" or "Zeroes") into and over Pearl Harbor, crashing into ships, buildings, and the ground in order to create explosions and kill as many people as possible (see "kamakaze pilots"). They also dropped bombs onto ships and certain areas, as well as fired ammunition (bullets) as they flew over the harbor in an attempt to destroy the harbor. The attack began around 7:35 a.m. on December 7th, 1941 at Pearl Harbor, Ford Island in Oahu, Hawaii, just west of Honolulu.
The only incident I am aware of occurred outside the entrance to Pearl Harbor shortly before the air attack. AN IJN submarine was fired upon and sunk by an American destroyer, the USS Ward. The submarine, however, was a midget submarine with a small displacement and a small crew, and it would technically qualify as a craft instead of a ship.
The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor started at 7:55 a.m. It ended at 9:45 a.m.
That would be the USS Ward a World War I vintage Destroyer.

It was the USS Ward who fired the first shots to a Japanese midget subs in the early morning of December 7, 1941 before the Japanese Imperial Army attack and bombed pearl Harbor.
No, America wanted to stay out of it; but joined when Pearl Harbor was bombed. Americe actually fired the first shot during the Pearl Harbour conflict when they spotted a jap sub in the waters of the Harbour.

The USN Destroyer USS Ward fired upon and sunk a Japanese Mini-Submarine (Midget Sub) before the air attack began.
The USN destroyer identified, fired upon, and sank a Japanese Mini-Submarine (Midget Sub).
The US was basically unprepared for war at the time of Pearl Harbor. The person in charge of the base at Pearl Harbor believed that there was no way Japan would attack without a deceleration of war. (He was fired soon after) the base at Pearl Harbot actually had an early warning. While a crew was just about to close a training land-based radar, they found a large concentration of planes flying directly toward them. It was reported, but not taken seriously. They were believed to be bombers scheduled to be coming from the mainland. Had the number of blips on the screen been mentioned, the outcome of Pearl Harbor might have been less disastrous.
Confederates fired on Ft. Sumter in Charleston Harbor.
