Union General Ormsby MacKnight Mitchel graduated from West Point in 1829. Forty-six cadets graduated that year and Mitchel ranked 15th among his class which included Robert E. Lee. Mitchel served in the Western Theater but his life was cut short by yellow fever in 1862.
Confederate General Theophilus Hunter Holmes graduated from West point in 1829. Among the 46 graduating cadets, Holmes was ranked 44th. Of note is the fact that this class of 1829, was the same class of Robert E. Lee was ranked second.
