The one single person to most widely promote the scientific discipline would probably be the Italian scientist Galileo.

Five hundred years before Galileo, Al Biruni of Persia employed methods very similar to our modern scientific methods in his examination of geology and astronomy.

Although the ancient Greeks made many great discoveries, these were deeply entangled with their philosophy and mythology, and actually somewhat hindered scientific progress in the long run.

Science was not invented as it's the study of the natural world. Mankind has been studying and trying to make sense of the natural world for as long as we have existed, so perhaps the first men and women "invented" science.
