Frank Whittle was an English engineer (and RAF officer) who is credited with developing one of the first practical turbine engines for use in aircraft. He worked parallel to a German engineer named Hans von Ohain (both of them claim to be "first") during the late 1930's and during the Second World War. While neither side widely used jet aircraft during the war, both the Axis and the Allies developed aircraft during the war that eventually lead to the "jet age" by the end of the 50's.
