An important person to the Pokanoket Tribe is Massasoit, the sachem (leader) who played a crucial role in the early interactions between Native Americans and English settlers in the 17th century. He is best known for forming a diplomatic alliance with the Pilgrims at Plymouth Colony, which helped ensure their survival during the harsh early years. Massasoit's leadership and vision significantly impacted the tribe's history and its relationships with European colonizers. His legacy continues to be celebrated by the Pokanoket people today.
They were not worried. The Pilgrims didn't bring enough supplies to last through the winter. The Pokanoket Tribe watched the newcomers and found they were as children needing help to learn how to survive. Their numbers were only 50 having lost half of their number who crossed the waters by spring. Certainly the pilgrims were not a threat. The Massasoit whose name is Ousa Mequin helped them by teaching them how to hunt, fish, and plant the crops they would need to survive. The Pokanoket Tribe, who were the headship tribe of the Wampanoag nation, later that year (1621) brought the food for the first Thanksgiving between the two cultures. The Indians found the Pilgrims to be a good people and not a threat at all. Those who arrived after the initial Pilgrims landed came to conquer, convert, and pillage. Those are the ones the Wampanoag fought the King Philip War against under the leadership of Metacom aka King Philip of the Pokanoket Tribe.

Massassoit [c. 1571-1661] was an Indian guest of the Pilgrims' first Thanksgiving, in 1621. He was the leader of Pokanoket Indians within the Wampanoag Confederacy. In that capacity, he had concluded a friendly treaty with the Pilgrims earlier in the year, on March 22. So he was a known and welcome guest to the newcomers.
"Massasoit Sachem" was actually chief Ousamequin, leader (sachem) of the Pokanoket tribe of the Massachusetts area. He was "Massasoit" (great leader) of the Wampanoag Confederacy, and lived from around 1581 to 1661.
The correct pronunciation of "Pokanoket" is poh-KAH-noh-ket. In this word, the stress is on the second syllable, "KAH." The "o" in the first syllable is pronounced as a long "o" sound like in "go," and the "e" in the last syllable is pronounced as a short "e" like in "bet."

The Cherokee were not important to California during colonial history. The Cherokee (as a tribe) never moved west of Oklahoma.
