Well "when they learned" what the British were up too, Washington spread his 20,000 troops along the NY harbor. Once General Howe of the British decided he had enough soldiers they attacked. In probably the largest battle in the Revolutionary War, The British drove the Americans back. As it is considered by many military historians to be one of his most impressive actions as Commander in Chief, Washington personally directed the withdrawal of his entire remaining army and all their supplies across the East river in one night without discovery by the British. He covered wagon and artillery wheels with rags, so not to make noise that British scouts would hear. He did not lose a man or camp follower in the withdrawal either.
The British troop's plan to defeat the American forces in the Battle of New York in 1776 involved a multi-pronged strategy that aimed to encircle and isolate the Continental Army. They sought to leverage their superior numbers and naval power to capture New York City, using a combined land and naval assault to cut off American supply lines and retreat routes. By seizing key locations and employing coordinated attacks, the British aimed to demoralize the American troops and force a swift surrender. However, the American forces, led by General George Washington, managed to evade complete encirclement and eventually retreated to fight another day.

Arnold sent a letter to the British commander through a Loyalist shopkeeper in Philadelphia to Sir Henry Clinton. Clinton used John Andre his adjutant general to deal with Arnold and his demands. By 1780 Clinton agreed to a payment of 20,000 pounds for for the capture of West Point and 3,000 troops. The plot was discovered when Andre carrying papers by Arnold was seized on Sept. 23, 1780 by the NY militia near Terrytown when he was returning from a meeting with Arnold. Arnold fled to Clinton in NYC and he never got a command or the money he asked for from the British. He was not trusted by anyone.

Well it depends on the company providing the policy. Most will calculate the premium based on your direct payroll and they could also add in payroll for your subcontractors. If you don't want to pick up the premium charge for your subcontractors you will have to show the insurance company that the subs carry their own liability insurance policy. Hope this helps. By the way NY is a difficult state to even find reasonable liability insurance for general contractors.
New York was occupied by the British.
