Poseidon was the god of the sea.

He was also believed to cause earthquakes and had the nickname "Earth Shaker." His brothers were Zeus and Hades. His parents were Cronus and Rhea, the titans. He had many lovers, both male and female, including Patroclus (comrade and possible lover of Achilles). Poseidon's Roman counterpart was Neptune.

There were also several minor water gods, such as Achelous, the river god.
