Freemasons are organized into Lodges. The man in charge of each Lodge is the Master of the Lodge. Lodges are organized into Grand Lodges. The man in charge of a Grand Lodge is the Grand Master. There are hundreds of Grand Lodges worldwide--nearly a hundred in the United States alone. A Grand Master is answerable to nobody except the Masons in his jurisdiction. There is no one person (or even group of persons) who is in charge of Masons worldwide.

Each man has his own specific reasons for looking into becoming a Freemason - reasons that are discussed during the interview process leading up to a ballot for membership. It is certainly interesting that many of these men are or become men of consequence in society, and many are the words in praise of the tenets of Freemasonry and their contribution to the man's drive and outlook on life. But ultimately we must also recognize that many great men are not Freemasons, and therefore Freemasonry should not be viewed as some automatic ticket to greatness.
