At his burning John Hooper even helped the man that had the job of putting the firewood together in bunches to be burnt- the branches that were to be burnt for John Hooper himself. It was winter and so the fire didn't start well because the wood was damp and wet. At first the wind blew the flames away and signed his hair and face. Then as the Bishop prayed the fire got going again and burnt his legs before going out again. He cried out 'Let me have more fire'. When the fire did start again it flared up and reached the bags of gunpowder which had been tied to his knees but the wind blew the explosions away from him….he had to then endure a slow and agonising death that lasted a whole three quarters of an hour as the fire crept up his body. All the time this was happening, he was praying.
The majority are American, and since America was settled by the British, i'd guess British. (Even some are British) . The surname Hooper appears to have been recorded in Devonshire, England where they lived from ancient times, references indicate before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A. D. The name was used by those who made hoops of iron or who lived on the Hop which is an enclosed marshland with houses built stilts. The it appears that original Hoopes of Pennsylvania may have been Quakers from England and is possible that Hoopes changed the spelling from another name to avoid religious persecution in England at the time from King Charles II and Queen Mary. It was Queen Mary who became known as the "Bloody Queen" as she had more than three hundred persons put to death. One of those was Bishop John Hooper. John Hooper was born aound 1495 in Somersetshire, England. He was educated at Oxford and later converted to the Protestant faith. Hooper left England for a number of years to avoid religious persecution by King Henry VIII. Hes recorded as living in Zurich. When King Henry died, John Hooper returned to London. England and was later made Bishop of Gloucester. However, soon after Mary became Queen and he was condemned as a heretic. He refused to recant and in 1533 he was burned at the stake. It is believed that soon after this many of his relatives changed their last name to other variations of Hooper to avoid the same fate.
