The state that caused a national crisis in 1849-1850 was California. The discovery of gold in 1848 led to a massive influx of settlers, resulting in California's rapid application for statehood in 1850. This created tensions over the issue of slavery, as California was proposed to be a free state, challenging the balance between free and slave states established by the Missouri Compromise. The crisis ultimately contributed to the Compromise of 1850, which aimed to address the escalating sectional conflicts.
Compromise of 1787 (the Great Compromise)
The Compromise of 1850 established the Utah and New Mexico territories, which were set aside for potential settlement by Native Americans and others. However, the compromise primarily focused on addressing issues related to slavery and territorial governance, rather than specifically allocating land for Indigenous peoples. The territories were meant to be organized under popular sovereignty, allowing settlers to decide on the legality of slavery, which often led to further displacement of Native communities.
John C. Calhoun led the fight against the Compromise of 1850 when he was a Senator from South Carolina. Calhoun was the 7th Vice President of the United States from March 4, 1825 to December 28, 1832.

The Missouri Compromise was proposed by Senator Henry Clay in 1820, not as part of the Compromise of 1850. The Compromise of 1850 was also led by Clay, alongside other prominent figures such as Daniel Webster and John C. Calhoun. The Missouri Compromise aimed to address the balance of slave and free states, while the Compromise of 1850 dealt with issues arising from the Mexican-American War and included measures like the admission of California as a free state.
