The part of the Missouri Compromise that was strongly supported by the South and opposed by the North was the provision allowing Missouri to enter the Union as a slave state. This compromise also established the 36°30' parallel, which prohibited slavery in the northern portion of the Louisiana Territory. The South favored the expansion of slavery into new territories, while the North opposed this expansion, fearing it would increase the power of slave states in Congress.
