The gladiatorial shows evolved over time. The early bouts were were funeral duties to/for a prominent citizen. They gradually evolved into the spectacles held in the Colosseum. At the beginning the family of the deceased paid for the bouts. Noticing their popularity, politicians paid for the event as it was a good way for them to get noticed. Finally, they became so expensive that only the emperor could afford to pay for them.
