It wasn't Lenin and the Bolshevik Party. In fact, it wasn't any particular group. A spontaneous demonstration of thousands of people in Petrograd broke out demanding that Czar Nicholas II put an end to shortages of food and manufactured goods. This demonstration spread to other Russian cities to the extent that the Czar was forced to call the garrison of Petrograd and other units of the Russian army to put down the demonstrations. The soldiers themselves were also unhappy with the Czar and refused to fight against the people. Nicholas II then realized he had no power to put down what was now becoming a full scale rebellion against his government. He was convinced by members of the Russian Duma and his ministers that he had no choice but to abdicate his throne since he had lost all support of both the soldiers, workers and peasants in the country and was now totally powerless.

No particular group overthrew the Tsar in the February Revolution of 1917. In Petrograd (formerly St. Petersburg), a spontaneous demonstration and strike by thousands of people occurred. When the Russian Army and the Petrograd garrison refused to obey the Tsar's command to forcibly end the demonstrations, Tsar Nicholas II realized he no longer had any real power in Russia. He was convinced he had to abdicate the throne or face an armed revolution, so he did step down.

Later in the October Revolution, the Bolsheviks under Lenin overthrew the Russian Provisional Government that had been put in place temporarily to maintain order.

The outcome of the Russo-Japanese war led to the 1905 Russian Revolution which the czar calmly signed a manifesto promising representative government and civil liberties. Yet, not long after he retracted these concessions and the Bolsheviks and other revolutionary groups won support. In 1914 another war was being fought and Russia was going through a food shortage, people were tired of war, and Russia was loosing the war. In March 1917 the army in Petrograd joined striking workers demanding reform and the Czar was forced out of his throne.
