From 1917 to 1922, Vladimir I. Lenin had virtual control of the Russia/USSR since he was in control of the Bolshevik Party and the Bolshevik Party was in control of the country. Although he was still head of the party until his death in January, 1924, he was not truly in control because he was disabled by strokes. Beginning in 1922, the country was ruled by Joseph Stalin, Grigory Zinoviev and Lev Kamenev. Many times they did so behind Lenin's back.
