The Battle, or better said the Siege of Petersburg was mainly a trench warfare and a war of attrition.
For a start, it can be a question of tactics: you may lose a battle, but that does not mean that you have lost the war. Secondly, you may sometimes wonder (again) why your adversary is putting so much energy in bringing you down. Doesn't he/she/they have a point in doing so ?
