Laozi (or Lao-tzu, 老子) was a philosopher of ancient China dated to the 6th century BC and is a central figure in Taoism (道教). For his famous work - Daode Jing (道德经), he became the most important Taoist author and provided the fundamental theory for the occurrence of Taoism. Laozi is widely recognized as the founder of Taoist school (道家), which is contemporary with Confucian (儒家). However, the founding of Taoism as a religion is traditionally ascribed to Zhang Daoling (张道陵, AD 34-156), which is almost 800 years later at the end of the Han Dynasty.
