Betsy Ross stitched the first American Flag.

The Betsy Ross story is a family legend that was unknown until nearly a century after Congress adopted the 13-star and 13-stripe flag. Ms Ross is known to have made flags, but her connection with sewing the very first flag of stars and strips is an undocumented myth. She was one of a number of flagmakers in Philadelphia at the time and may have been the one with the most family connections, but it wasn't until 1870 that her grandson made the claim that Betsy met with George Washington, made design suggestions, and sewed the first flag.
