QE2 was designed from the outset as a dual-purpose ship - for cruising in the winter months, and for continuing the historic transatlantic crossings the rest of the year. She made 806 Atlantic crossings and these were always successful and profitable.
Many of her passengers were rich and/or famous, and most were American, however she had a wide range of more economical cabins - some were surprisingly small - and people also used her as a transatlantic ferry. For people emigrating across the Atlantic she was surprisingly cheap since you could also take your car, (80 cars could drive onto her as built) your pets and all your worldly goods with you!
In her later years she was positioned as a reasonably priced cruise ship serving mostly European destinations but with occasional transatlantics and world cruises.
The QE2 has a draft of 32 ft (9.8 m), so deeperthan that would be best.It would seem QE2 and QM2 might be different ships of the line...
QE2's official maiden voyage departed from Southampton, England on the 2nd of May 1969 for New York. She had a 'mini maiden voyage' on 22 April in order to make sure the ship was ready, after various problems had been encountered in the previous months.
QE2's record was 3 days and 20 hours for the crossing, but for over 30 years she maintained a 5 night crossing schedule. This was later increased to 6 days to reduce wear and tear on the ageing ship, as well as to reduce fuel costs and make more money!
