The United States. They knew. They did not know how soon it would happen
The first wave of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor began at 7:48 A.M. local time on December 7, 1941. The second wave ended approximately 90 minutes later around 8:30-8:40.
Pearl Harbor came as a surprise to the U.S., so Roosevelt was able to do nothing about it.
The Japanese continued their advances west towards India and south towards Australia.
Japan thought the U.S.A was trying to stop their expansion.
No, there was only one reason that America used the atomic bomb. To cause Japan to surrender. The only other way to get Japan to surrender was to invade the country with infantry, and having seen how stubborn the Japanese fighters were at the little islands they defended in the Pacific, Americans knew that the loss of life on both sides would be horrific. To save American fighting men's lives, they decided to drop the bomb. If Japan had surrendered immediately, America would not have dropped the second bomb.
Pearl harbor ended on the same day, December 7th, 1945 at around 9:30 am. Yamamoto, the admiral in control of the Japanese fleet decided against a third wave because they had already lost the element of surprise.

Because of Pearl Harbor, I think?
Maybe because it was a sneak attack?

It depends on whose calendar you are using. For many in Europe it started Oct of 1939 when Germany invaded Poland. These were the first shots of the war and wouldn't stop there. If you use the American calendar it would be Dec. 7, 1941 with the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
