In 1960, Six-year-old Ruby Bridges was the only black student to be reassigned to the previously all-white William Frantz Elementary in New Orleans. She was sometimes accompanied to school by her mother, and driven by US federal marshals. Other parents would sometimes follow them to give her moral support.

Three other girls were reassigned to McDonogh 19 Elementary during the first year of desegregation in New Orleans public schools.
