The wife of the fourth U.S. president probably is best known for saving White House valuables as a British army invaded Washington, D.C. during the War of 1812. Among the items she rescued in August 1814, were Gilbert Stuart's famous portrait of George Washington, an original draft of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.

After the Madisons fled the presidential residence, the British eventually burned it and other public buildings.
