He was a former Military Cadet who was not a good student who enlisted in the Army, served in Martinique and rose to the rank of Sergeant by 1789. Desiring a transfer because the Island did not appeal to him, he was refused, he deserted and sailed to France where he enlisted in another Regiment and started his career all over. He had his failings, was not a strategic thinker, did a little looting and was just a wee bit insubordinate with Officers from the petty nobility. Napoleon loved him and needed him. He was violent, heroic and a demon on the Battlefield.
