Henry Clay Frick founded the H. C. Frick & Company, a coke manufacturing company. Coke in this context means the process of heating coal (the clumps of coal still attached to ore and clay dirt, so low grade coal that would be thrown out) in large beehive ovens out in fields to make "coke". This type of "coke" produced a long burning energy source used in steel mills. In Fayette County and Washington County, PA, there would be a line of 10-20 beehive ovens loaded and stoked 24-hours a day, every day, for nearby steel mills.

During the Homestead Strike of 1892, anarchist Alexander Berkman attempted to assassinate industrialist Henry Frick. Berkman believed that by killing Frick, he could inspire workers to rise up against oppressive labor conditions. He shot Frick multiple times and then stabbed him, but Frick survived the attack, and Berkman was subsequently arrested and imprisoned. This incident highlighted the intense class struggles and violence associated with labor disputes during that era.
