Liber (the free one) or Liber Pater (the free Father) was the god of viticulture and wine, fertility and freedom. He was a patron god of the plebeians and was part of their Aventine Triad (also referred to as the plebeian Triad or the agricultural Triad). This is a modern term for the joint cult of the Roman deities Ceres, Liber and Libera. The festival in his honour, the Liberalia was associated with free speech and the rights attached to coming of age. His cult became associated with Bacchus and his Greek equivalent Dionysus.

What is a Latin word for book?

The Latin word for book is "liber." In Latin, "liber" can refer to a book, a document, or even the inner bark of a tree used for writing. The word "liber" is derived from the Proto-Indo-European root "leudh-", meaning "to grow" or "to enlarge," reflecting the importance of books in expanding knowledge and understanding.

How did the library get its name?

The word Library originates from the late 14th century, from the Anglo-French word librarie, which means collection of books, and derives from the word librarium (meaning "chest for books").The word librariaum derives from the latin words liber and -ārius. Liber means "book", and likely derives from the older word luber, which refers to the "bark of a tree", and "to peel/shell". The latin suffix arius refers to a "thing or place" with which the prefix belongs to or is connected to. Thus, liber +-ārius would refer to a place where books belong.
