Bushranger, a nice sounding name that gives the impression that he had legitimate employment like a Park Ranger or conservasionist or wildlife and ecology warden. Wrong, wrong, wrong! In Aussie lingo a bushranger is a rustler, a common thief, a highwayman, a common criminal. Ned's legend is a Bonny and Clyde propoganda tale, something like Robin Hood. It is a fabrication that converts a vile murderer into a folk hero. It is nice Hollywood but terrible history.

The question may mean "what was Ned Kelly's occupation before he became a bushranger".

Ned Kelly had no occupation before becoming a bushranger. He was only twelve when his father died, and so he was required to leave school to take on the new position as head of the family, helping out around the family farm. Shortly after this, the Kellys moved to Glenrowan. As a teenager, Ned became involved in petty crimes, regularly targetting the wealthy landowners.
