Walter Tirel, also known as Walter Fitz Other, was a Norman nobleman who is best known for his role in the death of King William II of England in 1100. He was involved in a hunting accident during a royal hunt in the New Forest, where an arrow he shot accidentally struck the king, leading to William II's death. Following the incident, Tirel fled to Normandy, where he faced both infamy and heroism, depending on the perspective of historical accounts. His legacy is intertwined with the tumultuous political landscape of early 11th-century England.
William II of England was killed when hunting by an arrow fired by another member of the hunting party. Because the king was known for his terrible temper and his many clashes with the people around him it was quickly assumed that he had been shot at on purpose. Walter Tirel (or Thurol) was later named as the guilty party, although other names were sometimes mentioned as well. The early chronicles state that Tirel hit William while trying to shoot a passing stag, which would make it an accident. Historians are divided on the subject and will probably remain so, as there is no hard evidence on what really happened. Walter Tirel fled to France and remained in exile there for the rest of his life. But the fact that he was not stripped of all his posessions for regicide or high treason and that his family remained in favour is an indication that at the time it was seen as an accidental death.

Well there were many Walter Tirel's throughout the past, but I think you are refering to Walter Tirel III who was a Norman lord in the 11th 12th centuries who was involved in the death of king William II (son of William the conqueror and brother to Henry I) According to legend Tirel accidently shot King William II while hunting in a forest, killing him. There is speculation/rumor through the ages that William's brother Henry I arranged the murder due to his immediate succession to the English throne (The other brother Robert would have been the legitimate successor, but he was off fighting the crusades and in his absence Henry I seized the throne). Apparently Tirel fled to France after the incident and historians have placed his death between 1100 and 1130. Sorry I know this is very vague but theres alot of good material on Tirel if you can manage to dig it up. If there is anything wrong here please correct.
