Grant was in the same class at West Point as Lee. Lee was the top student at West Point while Grant was at the bottom of the class. When the civil war started Lee went to the Confederate cause while Grant stayed with the Union and proved himself a capable commander.
They had Robert E Lee who was second in his class at West Point and was a consistent commander of Confederate forces. The union had a series of commanders until Grant took the job. Interesting enough Grant was in the same West Point class as Lee but was last in the class.
