The Irish Volunteers.A fore-runner of the IRA. The reason was to set up an Irish Republic, independent of Great Britain. Actually the leaders of the rebellion knew that they hadn't a hope of winning but they hoped that by sacrificing their own lives they would galvanise a general revolt. And it worked though the British helped by executing the leadership, converting the generally unpopular revolutionary leaders into martyrs overnight. The 1916 Rising inspired a countrywide revolt in 1919 that ended in British withdrawal. The Easter Rebellion started on Easter Monday, April 24th 1916.
