British General Cornwallis surrendered his army at Yorktown in 1781, but it would be incorrect to say that this event ended the Revolutionary War. The British continued to have their army and navy in nearly all of the major coastal cities and sporadic battles continued for two more years until a treaty was signed in 1783.
Lord Cornwallis' surrender gave the opponents of the war in the English parliament enough influence to force the government to stop funding the war.
